    Drigong Monastery

      Drigong Monastery is about 150 kilometers from the downtown area of Lhasa. Because all the way there are stone roads, it takes about six hours to get there. The most famous site for sky burial of Tibet islocated in Drigong Monastery. One of the two world’s most famous site for skyburial is in India, the other is Drigong Monastery. Drigong is located in the mountain at the back of Drigong Monastery.It is said that people who have received an abhisheka from the Living Buddha of Drigong Monastery could free his soul from the body after death and enter intothe Three Good Realm instead of the hell. Therefore, many people take thetrouble of traveling a long distance and bring the dead here for sky burial.Drigong Monastery is the key monastery of the Drikung Khargyu, which is locatedby a River within the territory of Machogongkha County located in the east of Lhasa. It was builtby Drigongpa Renqinpa in 1179 AD. It stands among the steep mountainsdisplaying very spectacular scenery.

      Near Drigong Monastery are many temples of DrigongKhargyu located one by one. It is said that there was more than 30 temples inhistory, while the existing temples are at least six or seven. The DezhongTemple is in the deep of the mountain stream which is a famous Buddhist nunashram. The Dezhonggeothermal hot spring, with sufficient water volume and appropriate heat, can cure a variety of diseases and enjoys a great reputationin history. People stream in and out for tour, worship and bath. In the middleand lower reaches of Snow Pile River, many temples like, Zongtse Temple andGaze Temple are located.
