Norbulingkha
- Description
It is the meaning of “treasure garden” in Tibetan language, which is the summer palace for Dalai Lamas of successive ages. The whole garden covers an area of 360 thousand square meters, whose buildings take Gesang Palace as body, having 374 rooms and being the landscaping of the largest scale in Tibet. Norbulingka was built in the 1740s when the seventh Dalai Lama was in power. Before the 1740s, Norbulingka was still a wasteland full of wild beasts, thickly-growing weeds, dwarf willows and shrubberies, where the Lhasa river used to flow through. After participating in politics, Darai VII often came here bathing in the spring in order to treat his leg sickness. Hearing about this case of Darai VII, the central government at that time ordered the minister stationed in Tibet to set up a number of tents near the spring for Dalai lama to take rests and do chantings. This is the well-known Tent Palace and is also the predecessor of Norbulingka Palace. Now the entire building cluser at east side of the garden is called Norbulingka and the building cluster located a little bit west is called Golden Lingka. Entering the Norbulingka, walk forward around 200 meters along the left road and the first palace you will face is Gesang podrang, the earliest building in the Norbulingka. The Kelsang Podrang Palace was first constructed in 1755, which was built for Kelsang Gyatso, the 7th Dalai, to take bath only, therefore it was named so. At the exit of Kelsang Podrang Palace, turn right and then go further up, turn right again at the water tower, and go a bit further, you will find the Zoo on the left inside the fence. Golden Phodrang, built in 1926, is dedicated to the 13th Dalai Lama by a rich man named Chensek Khongphel. After entering the Tent Palace, there is a yard paved with stones. Under the passage to the west of the yard, there are two cars which are said to be used by Dalai Lama and were transported through Himalaya in pieces. Now they are just wrecks. The new palace is one of the famous buildings in the Norbulingka Palace. Inside of the new palace there are vivid frescoes which are rich in themes and colors. What is attractive among them is the drawing of Sakyamuni and his eight pupils under a pipal, which was painted in the scripture hall at the west of northern temple. Sakyamuni is the largest and finest figure among them, presenting an image of kindness and quietness. Images of his eight disciples are very lifelike, and their solemn and thoughtful expressions are portrayed very vividly. It is a rare exquisite work. Facing the entrance, the temple at the right is called Tagten Migyur Podrang (Eternal Palace), of which the opposite is a man-made palace at the center of a lake. It is the prettiest place in Norbulingka Palace and the Lake Center Palace and Dragon King Palace that are the main buildings.
